Every October the server gets a little spooky. Everything on this page only happens during Halloween season, which runs from October 1 to November 1.
Spooky sounds
Every minute or two (somewhere between 45 and 150 seconds) you might hear something odd from a few blocks behind you: a creaking door, a wolf howl, a cackling witch, footsteps on gravel that creep closer.
- In the Overworld, sounds play at night or when you're somewhere dark.
- In the Nether and the End they can play any time.
- Only you hear your sounds. Nobody else hears them.
- They play on the Ambient/Environment volume slider, so you can turn them down in your sound settings.
Choosing how spooky
Pick your level with /spooky:
| Setting | What you get |
|---|---|
on (default) |
Every sound, including the scary ones like ghast screams and a warden heartbeat. |
mild |
Only the gentle sounds. Tricks don't darken your screen. |
off |
No spooky sounds. |
Your choice is saved and stays the same next season. It only changes sounds and the darkness trick. Pumpkin-headed mobs and trick-or-treating still work for everyone.
Pumpkin-headed mobs
Some mobs spawn wearing a carved pumpkin or a glowing jack o'lantern on their head. About 1 in 7 of these mobs gets one when they spawn naturally:
Zombies, husks, drowned, zombie villagers, skeletons, strays, bogged, piglins and zombified piglins.
The heads never drop, so you can't farm them. A helmet stops zombies and skeletons burning in sunlight, so these ones stick around during the day.
Trick or treat
Type /trickortreat (or /tot) to knock. You can knock once every 60 minutes.
About 7 times out of 10 you get a treat, a named snack with a Halloween label:
| Treat | Amount |
|---|---|
| Pumpkin Spice Cookie | 1 to 3 |
| Candy Apple | 1 to 2 |
| Gummy Bats | 2 to 5 |
| Glow-in-the-Dark Gumdrops | 2 to 4 |
| Caramel Drizzle | 1 |
| Grandma's Pumpkin Pie | 1 |
| Golden Taffy | 1 (rare) |
They're normal food underneath, so you can eat them. If your inventory is full they drop at your feet.
The rest of the time you get a trick: a cackle and a swarm of bats that bursts out around you and vanishes in smoke a few seconds later. The bats can't be hurt and don't drop anything. With /spooky on your screen also goes dark for 3 seconds.
For staff
/halloween on and /halloween off force the season on or off and are saved to the config. /halloween auto goes back to the dates. Staff skip the trick-or-treat cooldown, which is handy for testing.
